What changes in Year 9
GCSE options are decided
Subject choices are usually made in Year 8 or early Year 9. Strong performance now keeps more doors open.
Some GCSE content may begin
Many schools start GCSE-style content or assessments during Year 9, and the pace increases.
Foundations get tested
Weak algebra, essay technique or scientific vocabulary now limits what a student can attempt at GCSE, including which tier of paper is realistic.
