Business Studies Is Not Common Sense

The most damaging misconception about Business Studies is that it requires no real preparation — that it is 'common sense' compared to the sciences or mathematics. Students who arrive at GCSE or A-Level with this assumption consistently underperform. Business Studies rewards students who know exactly how to structure an answer for their specific exam board, how to apply theory to case study material, and how to write evaluatively. These are learned skills. They do not come from reading the textbook.

How Top Students Answer Business Studies Questions

At GCSE, IGCSE, and A-Level, our students use the PEEL method for extended answers: Point, Explain, Example, Link back to context. For evaluation questions, we use the AJIM structure: Answer, Justify, It Depends On, Most Importantly. These frameworks ensure students hit every assessment objective the mark scheme rewards — consistently. Each exam board has a different paper structure and question style. AQA, Edexcel, Cambridge International, and OCR all require board-specific practice materials. Using the wrong past papers — or mixed papers — is one of the most common preparation mistakes we see.

What We Cover — GCSE and IGCSE Business Studies

Business objectives and types of organisations, classification of businesses, location decisions, international business, internal and external communication, recruitment and training, employee motivation, organisational structures, sources of finance, cash flow forecasting, cost and break-even analysis, financial documents and accounts analysis, market research, the marketing mix, economies and diseconomies of scale, methods of production, quality management, and the sales process.

What We Cover — A-Level and IAL Business

Nature and purpose of business, marketing mix and strategy, managing people, entrepreneurship and leadership, financial planning and accounts analysis, resource management, external influences, decision-making techniques, managing change, global markets and business expansion, and global marketing.

Separate Sessions for Every Specification

Business Studies and Economics are subjects where exam board matters enormously — AQA, Edexcel, Cambridge International, and OCR all have different paper structures, question styles, and marking priorities. At Improve ME, we run separate sessions for each specification and year group throughout the day. Your child is never in a mixed-spec group where preparation for the wrong board becomes someone else's problem.

Is Your Child Ready for GCSE Business Studies?

Students should be comfortable with percentages, ratios, graphs, averages, and basic algebra before beginning GCSE or IGCSE Business Studies. These skills appear frequently in calculations — elasticity, break-even analysis, national income, and inflation all require numerical fluency. Students who are not confident with these areas will benefit from additional maths support alongside their Business Studies preparation.

What Students Achieve

We target Grades 7, 8, and 9 at GCSE and A and A* at IGCSE — achievable with the right exam technique, not just content knowledge. At A-Level we target grades A and A*. At IB we target scores of 6 and 7 — the bands competitive universities expect to see. A student from Jumeirah College joined Improve ME for Economics and improved from a GCSE Grade 2 to a Grade 8/9. Students from Dubai College and JESS have gone on to gain admission to UCL and Oxford after completing their A-Level and IB Business and Economics programmes at Improve ME.
