- Cell structure: animal, plant, bacterial, prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- Microscopy and calculating magnification
- Transport in cells: diffusion, osmosis, and active transport
- Cell division: the cell cycle, stages of mitosis, and cancer
- Stem cells: types, uses, and ethical considerations
- Communicable diseases: viral, bacterial, fungal, and protist pathogens
- Immune system: vaccination, antibiotics, and monoclonal antibodies (Triple)
- Non-communicable diseases: cancer, CVD, and lifestyle risk factors
- Drug discovery and development, including clinical trials
Bioenergetics and Homeostasis
- Photosynthesis: rate factors, uses of glucose, and leaf structure
- Aerobic and anaerobic respiration, and response to exercise
- The nervous system: neurons, synapses, and the reflex arc
- The brain and the eye, including defects and treatments (Triple)
- Hormonal control: blood glucose regulation and negative feedback
- The menstrual cycle, contraception, and reproductive technologies
- Thermoregulation and the role of ADH in water balance
- Kidney function: dialysis and kidney failure
- Plant hormones: auxins, phototropism, and gravitropism (Triple)
Ecology and Genetics
- Ecosystems: communities, populations, and interdependence
- Abiotic and biotic factors affecting distribution
- Nutrient cycles: carbon, water, and nitrogen
- Biodiversity, human impact, and conservation strategies
- DNA structure, transcription, and translation
- Genetic inheritance: Punnett squares, pedigree analysis, and alleles
- Variation, natural selection, and evidence for evolution
- Classification and speciation
- Genetic engineering, selective breeding, and cloning
Assessment Structure
Two written papers cover the full specification; required practicals are assessed within the papers. We build exam technique and extended response skills.
- 1 hour 45 minutes (Triple) / 1 hour 15 minutes (Combined)
- Tests cell structure, organisation, communicable and non-communicable diseases, and bioenergetics
- Mix of multiple choice, structured, closed short-answer, and open-response questions
- Required practicals on microscopy, osmosis, enzymes, and food tests
- 1 hour 45 minutes (Triple) / 1 hour 15 minutes (Combined)
- Tests homeostasis, genetics, evolution, and ecology
- Same question format as Paper 1
- Exam-technique focus on 6-mark extended-response questions
- Required practicals on decay, reaction times, and field investigations
