A-Level Biology
Build fluency in biological molecules, genetics, gene expression, and ecosystems with synoptic and practical assessment support.
What is A-Level Biology?
A-Level Biology is the gateway qualification for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Biomedical Sciences, and Ecology. It is one of the most content-heavy A-Level subjects, covering cell biology, genetics, human physiology, ecology, and evolution in considerable depth across two years. In addition to content knowledge, A-Level Biology increasingly demands extended written responses, data analysis, and practical skills — all of which require dedicated preparation beyond classroom teaching. At Improve ME, our specialist Biology tutors combine thorough content delivery with the essay technique and data response skills that consistently separate A and A* candidates from the rest of the field.
A-Level Biology Course Content
Advanced depth with step-by-step problem-solving, synoptic assessment preparation, and top-grade strategy for university.
Cells, Exchange & Transport
- Cell structure — prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, ultrastructure, cell fractionation, microscopy calculations
- Biological molecules — water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins (structure, function, and testing); enzymes (mechanism, factors affecting rate, inhibition)
- Cell membranes and transport — fluid mosaic model, osmosis, diffusion, active transport, endocytosis, exocytosis
- Cell division — mitosis and the cell cycle, meiosis, significance of cell division in growth and reproduction
- Exchange surfaces — surface area to volume ratio, adaptations of exchange surfaces, gas exchange in mammals, fish, and insects
- Mass transport — haemoglobin (structure, oxygen dissociation curves, Bohr shift); xylem and phloem (structure and function); transpiration (cohesion-tension theory)
Genetics, Evolution & Ecosystems
- Nucleic acids — DNA and RNA structure, semi-conservative replication, transcription and translation, genetic code
- Genetic inheritance — monohybrid and dihybrid crosses, codominance, sex linkage, epistasis, Hardy-Weinberg principle
- Gene expression and regulation — totipotency, stem cells, gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, epigenetics, cancer
- Recombinant DNA technology — restriction enzymes, vectors, PCR, gel electrophoresis, genetic engineering applications
- Evolution and classification — natural selection, evidence for evolution, speciation, phylogenetics, classification systems
- Ecosystems — nutrient cycles (carbon and nitrogen), energy transfer and efficiency, succession, conservation and biodiversity
Control, Homeostasis & Reproduction
- Nervous system — neurones (structure and function), action potentials, synaptic transmission, the brain, reflexes
- Hormonal system — endocrine glands and hormones, insulin and glucagon in blood glucose regulation, adrenaline
- Homeostasis — principles of negative feedback, thermoregulation in mammals, osmoregulation (kidney structure and function, ADH)
- Plant responses — tropisms, auxin, gibberellins, commercial applications of plant hormones
- Immunity — specific and non-specific defence, B and T lymphocytes, primary and secondary immune responses, vaccines, monoclonal antibodies
- Reproduction — sexual and asexual reproduction, meiosis in context, IVF and cloning, ethical considerations

Our A-Level Biology Teaching Approach
Content Consolidation
A-Level Biology contains more factual content than almost any other A-Level. We use active recall, spaced repetition, and concept mapping to ensure students retain content reliably rather than losing marks through forgetting.
Extended Writing Technique
Papers 1, 2, and 3 all include extended writing questions worth 6–15 marks. We teach students to plan and write these responses with the specific biological vocabulary, logical sequencing, and completeness that mark schemes demand.
Data Response and Experimental Analysis
A-Level Biology papers routinely present unfamiliar experimental data for students to interpret. We train students to extract relevant information, apply their biological knowledge, and draw evidence-based conclusions — a skill that requires dedicated practice.
Practical Paper and Essay
Paper 3 includes both a critical commentary on experimental data and a choice of 15-mark essays. We prepare students specifically for both — covering common essay titles and the expected content for each.
