KS1 · AGES 5–7

Key Stage 1 Mathematics

Structured mathematics sessions for ages 5–7. We build core number confidence, early geometry, and logical reasoning through our MaThesis programme — with a maximum of two students per tutor.

OVERVIEW

What Is Key Stage 1 Mathematics?

Key Stage 1 Mathematics establishes the critical skills children need to progress through primary school and beyond. At this stage, children move from early number recognition to applying arithmetic confidently, exploring shape and space, and beginning to interpret data.

At Improve ME, we follow our structured MaThesis programme alongside the KS1 national curriculum — ensuring your child builds genuine understanding, not just procedural answers. Sessions run with a maximum of two students per tutor, so every misconception gets caught and corrected early.

  • Positional and directional language

Interpreting information and thinking logically

ASSESSMENT

How We Track Progress

At the start
Baseline Assessment

We assess your child at the start to identify exactly where they are in relation to the KS1 curriculum — what's secure, what's emerging, and what needs immediate attention.

Every session
Session Monitoring

Progress is tracked session by session. We note which concepts have been grasped and which need revisiting so no gap goes unaddressed.

Regular updates
Parent Updates

Parents receive regular updates on what their child has covered, what's improved, and what the next focus areas are. Clear, honest progress reporting — no surprises.

TEACHING APPROACH

How We Teach It

01

Small Groups

Every KS1 session has a maximum of two students. This isn't just a selling point — it fundamentally changes what's possible. Your child can't hide behind others, and neither can gaps.

02

Written Practice from the Start

We teach children to work accurately and systematically from the very beginning. Written practice and correct method are emphasised at every session — because habits formed at KS1 shape how children approach maths for years.

03

Structured Progression

Our MaThesis programme sequences learning deliberately. Each session builds on the last, so your child is always moving forward — not repeating what they already know or jumping ahead before foundations are secure.

04

Progress Tracking

We track exactly what your child has covered and how confidently they've grasped it. Regular updates keep parents informed, and our tutors adjust the pace based on what each child needs — not what a class average suggests.

What Comes Next

KS1 is where habits form. Children who leave Year 2 with secure arithmetic, confident reading, and a willingness to attempt new problems have a fundamentally different experience at KS2 than those who arrive with gaps. Getting this stage right is one of the most valuable investments a parent can make.
