EYFS Mathematics

Structured mathematics sessions for ages 3–5. We build early number confidence, shape recognition, and logical reasoning through our MaThesis programme — with one tutor per child, every session.

OVERVIEW

What Is EYFS Mathematics?

EYFS Mathematics develops secure early foundations in number, numerical patterns, shape, space, and measure. Children learn to count confidently, understand quantity, and apply simple calculations — while also recognising patterns and exploring spatial awareness.

The statutory framework places strong emphasis on building a secure grounding in number to support future mathematical success. At Improve ME, we align closely with the EYFS framework while extending learning through our structured MaThesis programme — ensuring children develop confidence, accuracy, and skills that go beyond classroom expectations.

What Your Child Learns

Four areas of focus across every EYFS Mathematics session.

Building early number confidence

Number & Arithmetic

  • Number sequencing up to 50 — recognising, ordering, and finding missing numbers
  • Mental addition and subtraction using counting on and counting back
  • Introductory multiplication through skip counting and doubling
  • Early division through sharing and halving activities
  • Simple word problems using addition or subtraction

Exploring the physical world mathematically

Shapes & Measures

  • Recognising 2D shapes and understanding their basic properties
  • Fine motor development through tracing numbers and shapes with precision
  • Size and measurement concepts — big/small, long/short, heavy/light
  • Reading and labelling a clock with simple time

Making sense of information

Data Handling & Comparison

  • Sorting and classifying objects into clear categories
  • Comparing numbers using greater than, less than, more, fewer, most, least
  • Interpreting simple picture graphs, bar graphs, and data tables

Thinking carefully, not just calculating

Reasoning & Logic

  • Identifying the odd one out and spotting differences
  • Recognising and completing patterns and sequences
  • Solving simple 4×4 Sudoku puzzles using shapes and numbers
  • Non-verbal reasoning tasks that build analytical confidence

Logical thinking at EYFS is developed through mathematical games and structured activities. Children learn to observe closely, think systematically, and apply problem-solving strategies — skills that build the foundation for CAT4 preparation in later years.

ASSESSMENT

How We Track Progress

Before sessions
Baseline Assessment

Before sessions begin we assess your child to understand exactly where they are — what's forming, what's secure, and where to start. At EYFS this is observational and gentle, not a formal test.

Every session
Session Monitoring

Progress is tracked every session. We note what your child has grasped and what needs more time, so learning always moves forward at the right pace.

Regular updates
Parent Updates

Parents receive regular updates on what their child has learned, where confidence has grown, and what comes next. At this age, the tutor-parent relationship is especially important — and we take it seriously.

TEACHING APPROACH

How We Teach It

01

One-to-One Sessions

Every EYFS Mathematics session is one tutor, one child. At this age that ratio isn't a luxury — it's the only way to teach effectively. Your child gets complete attention, and the tutor can respond to every moment of confusion or curiosity immediately.

02

Written Practice from the Start

We emphasise written work and correct method from the very first session. Children learn not just to get the right answer, but to record their thinking accurately — a habit that pays dividends all the way through primary school.

03

Structured Progression

Our MaThesis programme sequences every topic deliberately. Sessions don't follow whatever happened to come up in school that week — they follow a structured path designed to build genuine understanding from the ground up.

04

Progress Tracking

We track what your child has covered and how confidently they've grasped it. Parents receive honest, specific updates — not vague reassurances.
